A Holistic Approach to the Family’s Quality of Life

CompassionNet is a community-based Pediatric and Perinatal Palliative Care program, sponsored by the Lifetime Healthcare Companies, including Excellus BCBS and Univera. We support families caring for a child with a potentially life-threatening illness or medical condition in addition to families anticipating the birth of a child with a potentially life-threatening condition.

Our interdisciplinary pediatric palliative care team provides compassionate, collaborative, all-inclusive care to help alleviate suffering and address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual challenges that often impact a child and family’s quality of life. When a child is diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness, our team will work closely with hospital staff and primary care providers to help support the child, siblings and family through diagnosis, treatment, stabilization, cure, or at times, end of life and bereavement. With expertise in supporting families through the challenges and difficult decisions that illness brings, our team partners with families, offering support and guidance, to help them understand and navigate their options and goals for care.

We recognize that each family is unique and it’s very important to us to know and understand our families’ experiences and needs. Every CompassionNet family is connected with a Case Manager, clinically skilled to support the emotional needs of the family and help navigate practical issues that family members face in coping with the child’s illness. The Case Manager and family work together to develop a plan of support tailored to make a difference in their quality of life. Through collaboration with community organizations and resources, such as expressive therapists, CompassionNet extends the “net” of support to reach beyond the physical needs of the child to the unmet needs of all family members.

In addition to their Case Manager, families have access to CompassionNet’s Pediatric Palliative Care Medical Team and our Certified Child Life Specialists. Our Medical Team specializes in pain and symptom management, in addition to palliative care coordination and consultation, and includes a Registered Nurse, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Pediatricians certified in palliative care. Our Child Life Specialists have expertise supporting both the children on our program and their siblings, helping them to better understand and cope with the diagnosis, medical treatment, challenges and emotions these bring.
